Two Different Approaches
Each approach serves a different purpose
5e Cognition Educational Assessment
Focused on understanding how a student learns and what to do next.
Includes:
- academic achievement testing (WIAT-4)
- cognitive assessments (memory and learning, executive functioning)
- in-depth assessment math and language processing
Primary purpose:
- understand how a student learns and processes information
- identify why difficulties are occurring
- provide clear, practical strategies
- support IPP planning and recommendations
Traditional Psychoeducational Assessment
Used when formal diagnosis or access to supports is required.
Includes:
- cognitive (IQ) testing (WISC)
- academic achievement testing (WIAT)
Primary purpose:
- determine eligibility for diagnosis
- support funding or specialized services
- meet school or system requirements
Does Your Child Need IQ Testing?
Cognitive (IQ) testing is used to determine whether learning difficulties are consistent with a learning disability or a broader intellectual delay.
This distinction is required for formal diagnosis.
An IQ score is not necessary to:
- identify specific academic skill gaps
- understand how a student learns
- develop effective, targeted strategies
When the 5e approach may be the right fit
- You want to understand how your child learns
- You are looking for clear, practical next steps
- A formal diagnosis is not required at this time
When a Traditional Psychoeducational Assessment May Be Needed
- Formal diagnosis of a learning or intellectual disability
- Applications for funding or specialized supports
- When required by schools or external agencies
How These Results Help
Clear answers lead to better decisions.
- guide instructional strategies
- support IPP development
- strengthen communication with schools
- provide clear, actionable next steps
A Focused, Practical Approach
This approach combines standardized academic assessment with deeper insight into how a student learns.
It provides meaningful, actionable information without requiring a full cognitive assessment when it is not necessary.
💡 Understanding how a student learns is the first step toward meaningful progress.
Learn More About AssessmentsOptional Support After Assessment
Not every family needs, or wants, the same level of support.
Clear, Practical Information
Some families want clear information they can take to school or share with other professionals.
The assessment report is designed to be understandable, practical, and easy to use in conversations with educators or other professionals.
Guidance for Next Steps
Some families want help turning results into action.
This may include prioritizing concerns, understanding recommendations, or developing simple, realistic strategies.
Short-term, individualized guidance can be provided based on assessment results.
Both approaches are valid.
Support is optional, short-term, and designed to fit into real life, not overwhelm it.
